Autumn

The colours have mellowed and softened, greens melt into red and gold. The night air has a new chill and the garden is giving a final display with the Autumn harvest. We collect and store the pumpkins and squash, pick pears, apples, quince and sloes. There are tay berries, brambles and Autumn raspberries, which we eat and enjoy but also to save and freeze. Every crop is precious as it might be the last of the year, slowly we retreat ready for Winter.

apples, blackberries, butternut squash, cabbage, pears and pumpkins

Autumn Recipes

The kitchen is warmed by the wood burning stove and the pots simmer with soups, stocks and casseroles again. Meals are hearty and comforting, with plenty of root vegetables and Sunday roast lunches. The pantry shelves start to fill with cordials, chutnies, jam, pickles and homemade liquors; as the pantry is replenished for the months ahead. We work away through the festivties of the season, with bonfire night and pumpkin carving for Halloween. Marking the passing of time and the countdown to the end of the year.
